I don’t completely understand

the ways of Time,

slow in the waiting,

why she haunts the

north window

with a wordless stare

her hand raised in a thought,

yet when noticed,

slips thin as that

and eel flat,

down the edges of

twilight’s long, dark hallway,

to vanish like slick magic

into the

enigma of Precambrian

outer limits.

I cannot explain

the matrix of the stars,

such a spangled assembly

of platinum incandescence,

where light begins

as merely a frail rumor,

then confirms

with authority it’s

transfiguration

into violet shadows

draped across

the naked shoulders

of the Universe.

I will never fully comprehend

the Theory of  Trees,

the necessary changing of

seasonal accessories,

or their secret code

for knobby limbs and latticed twiglets,

leaf veins coursing with

juicy, green lifeblood.

Blindly, they obey

the chemical instructions

for their petrified construction

encrypted in their

seeds of promise,

bud, bloom, tango, die.

I cannot deeply fathom

how the

indigo sea,

full of shimmering madness,

with it’s pretty noise

and careless movement,

can hear the

trade winds whisper

foreign mystery,

its salty widescreen history,

and reach to

kiss the

sandy feet

of sun bleached shores,

in perfect measured

rise and fall

of tidal moonlit rhythm.

I cannot solve the puzzle of

windswept canyons,

ancient cornerstones of Earth,

who remember from

their vestal birth

how to recite

the poetry of rocks

splashed just beneath

the roaring thunderfalls

while eagles silent soar,

drafting high and free,

in attitude of flight

above the copper

tattooed rim.
